Cilly Stuff

All of Kelly's artwork from Animal Comics has been archived at the Digital Comic Museum, but I've got my own scans of some of the stories to illustrate the menagerie that Kelly worked on in his journeyman days. Case in point: Cilly Goose from Animal Comics #15.

  1. Kelly did a lot of underrated and mostly unknown work in Animal Comics in addition to the early Pogo material. Possibly my absolute favorite moment in the title comes from the Cilly Goose story in 16. One character says they "used to belong to a Western Sprinting and Lithographing Company." I doubt anybody got the gag back then but I laughed so hard I almost couldn't breathe.

Now if I could only find a copy of Animal #5; I'm also missing 4 and 7 but there's no Kelly in those.

  2. Congratulations! For your outstanding work in the Sphere of Blogs, you have been selected to receive the coveted Kreativ Blogger Award, an honor that was never bestowed on the likes of John F. Kennedy, Gandhi, or Pablo Picasso.

  3. Thank you so much for the honor, but I respectfully and regretfully must decline the nomination on grounds that . . . well . . . just on grounds. Besides, if I accepted this award, it would put me in a higher tax bracket and that is something I just can't afford. The whirled is better off with me just hiding in my little cave as my scanner churns its way through stacks and stacks of old paper.

    Cheers!

  4. I just got around to seeing the 1944 Paramount "Noveltoons" short that this comic is related to. Cilly was much more a farm animal in the animation, whereas she's more like the Carl Barks sort of ducks in the comic.
